Kissing Friends, Kissing Enemies

Friday. I dreaded this day since the event that happened yesterday. I had to go to school anyways. Maybe I could figure out how to get my friends back.

I made my way to school, as usual, and Chaz appeared. He wasn’t on the bus like before. He had this shiny new Corvette. He must’ve passed his drivers test.

“Hey, Chaz, nice car.” I called to him.

He didn’t answer. He didn’t look back. For the first time in a long time, I knew I was rejected by everyone.

In homeroom, first period, I went to go sit in the empty seat by Chaz. I guess he had made a new friend because it was taken by someone else. I knew her, we all did. She was nicknamed Quiet Jane, hence her quiet and shyness.

They were talking up a storm. I went back to my seat.

Lunch was probably the worst. I just made it out of the lunch line and looked at where I used to sit. Quiet Jane was in my seat.

I made my way past them to an empty table near the back. They hushed, then started again. I had to get my friends back.

I just sat there, looking way out of place, and I realized Taylor wasn’t there. I guess she stayed home. I’ll find out later. Or now.

“Hey look! It’s the reject!” someone yelled.

I turned to see who they were talking to. It was me.

How did I know?

Chaz, out of all people, was the one to shout it out. He was pointing to me. Everyone was laughing in my direction. There goes my social rep.

I couldn’t take it much longer. I stormed out of my seat towards Chaz.

I grabbed his arm and pulled him out of the cafeteria into the hallway.

“What the hell is wrong with you! Trying to make my life miserable?” I asked him.

He was still laughing and pointing, until I almost broke his finger. I guess that wasn’t funny.

“What the hell Chanel? Can’t you take a joke?”

“Jokes aren’t meant to ruin other’s lives.”

“Really? Cause you sure did ruin Taylor’s yesterday.”

“For the last time Chaz, I did not do that!” I told him.

“Oh really? How am I supposed to believe that.”

“It’s true. She didn’t do it.” said another voice.

Out of the shadows comes Josh. Figured.

“What are you doing here?” Chaz asked him.

“I’m just trying to set some things straight. So, lets think about yesterday.”

“Yes, let’s.” I told them.

“Well, lets start from the beginning. Chanel was in the lunch room the time that such event happened. So, how can she put up dozens of posters, flyers, pictures, etc. in such a short amount of time? Care to think about that?” Josh said.

I have to admit, he is sure the planner.

“Ok, that proves she’s innocent. Still doesn’t prove how whoever done it knew about Taylor’s liking to you.”

“You sure are right, aren’t you? It doesn’t prove that. But I do have my ways.”

I guess that remark pulled Chaz over the edge.

“Sick son of a bitch. Couldn’t you have just told Taylor you didn’t like her or want to go to prom with her privately? Why should she be publicly hurt?”

“Oh, the things I do for others,“ was all Josh said.

Then the fists started flying.

I guess everyone in the cafeteria heard because they were all cheering “Fight! Fight! Fight!”.

I didn’t want either one hurt. And I guess neither did Gina, Bethany, or Quiet Jane.

“Listen, before we stop them, Beth and I wanted to apologize. We thought about what happened and there was no way that you could put over a dozen posters and crap in a short amount of time.” Gina said.

“I’m sorry too. For, you know, stealing your friends.” Quiet Jane said.

“I accept both apologies. Now can we stop them!”

To be honest, I was scared.

But when the principal and other higher school authorities came to break it up, I was glad.

I was holding onto Chaz, while Gina was holding Josh. It was just us four since we persuaded the principal that we would talk it out.

“I got nothing else to say. To any of you. Except for Chanel.” Josh said, looking my way.

“Dig yourself a hole and fall in it, Josh. You are causing too much drama in our lives.”

“Don’t be that way, sweetie. I love you too.”

Then it was Chaz’s turn to hold me back.

“Calm down, Nell. He’s not worth it.” Gina said to me.

“Besides, we can beat him outside, when school’s over.” Chaz whispered in my ear.

“Gina, can us three just get some time alone? You shouldn’t have to be involved in what Josh started.” I told her.

“Ok. But if you need me, I’ll risk getting my phone taken.” And she left. What are best friends for?

Chaz then let go of me.

“Ok, so lets see what we got here. 1 girl. 2 guys. She likes one. One likes her. And the other loves her. Care to figure it out?” Josh said.

“This isn’t funny. We have no time for your games.”

“Ok, but who do you really like Chanel? Trivia question.” Josh said.

That seemed to grab all of our attention. And I was scared.

“You want the truth?” I asked him.

“Of course.”

“Ok. I really used to like you, Josh. I admit it. Ok? But…”

“But? But what?”

“I think I like” and I pointed to Chaz.

I turned to see his expression.

His eyes were lit up.

“Quit lying to yourself. If you do really like him, prove it.”

Prove it. Something I always seemed to need to do.

“You want me to prove it?”

He nodded his head.

I turned into Chaz’s direction. We smiled at each other before I was going to do the unthinkable.

We closed our eyes, moved our lips closer, and before I knew it, I was kissing my best friend. I have no idea what it was, but a sudden spark was lit between us.

“Ok, you two can stop now.” was all I heard Josh say before he grabbed my head and kissed me.

“Any sparks?” he asked after we was done.

“Nothing.” I said with a sly smile.

He then turned and went back to his class. Or the nurse. Who cares?

“Were we done yet?” I heard Chaz say with a slight smile in the way he said it.

“I guess not.” I said, with a smile in return.
