What Are The Odds

“Hey. I’m Josh and this is my quiet younger brother Nolan. We call him Nick for short though.” He sticks his hand out towards me. Should I shake it? Should it just stay there. Before I could even touch his finger, Taylor introduced herself.

“That’s cute. I’m Taylor. I believe we have 7th period Social Studies together? Oh, and these are my best friends Gina and Chanel.”

Me and Gina had managed a “hi” to them as soon as our order was called.

“Order for 3 cheeseburgers, a vanilla shake, and 2 chocolate shakes is ready!” yelled the waiter.

“Sorry, that’s our meal.”

I left and went to get our food. To be honest, I was feeling very uncomfortable. Since when did Taylor become to calm around new boys? And when did Gina actually go silent? Hard questions for hard times.

I paid (and tipped) the cashier and went back to our table. By that time, they were all laughing up a storm. This, this is bad I thought.

“Hey, what’s so funny?” I ask them. I actually felt out of the loop by new boys.

“Ha ha. Oh my gosh Chanel. They are hilarious!” Gina manages to say. I hadn’t seen her laugh that hard since last year.

“Yeah, Chanel. You wanna hear it?” Josh asks me.

“Uh, sure.” I say with a sweet smile.

“Ok, so spell icup.”

“Are you serious? That’s so old, Josh.” When did I start calling him by his first name? And did it just sound…. flirty?

“C’mon, you’re gonna ruin the joke.” He smiles as he says it. And for being such a girl I am, I swooned at him.

“Ok, ok. I C U P.”

“On me?”

For some strange reason. That just literally cracked me up. I could feel the stares of the others in the food court.

“Ok, ok. So, we just made big old fools of ourselves. How about we eat our meal, and go prom shopping?” I offer.

“Um, heck yeah.” Taylor agreed.

“Hey, do you guys want some?” Gina offered half of her burger to Nick.

“Thanks, uh…?”

“Gina. Gina Roberts.”

Wow Gina. Just wow.

“And I’m Taylor Harold.”

“Josh Matthews, even though you probably already knew that.”

“Yup. And since I hate being out the loop, I’m Chanel Peters.”

I stick my hand out to him and he shakes it. What I didn’t expect was for him to kiss my hand like a 14th century gentleman.

“Nice to meet you,” he said with a to-die-for smile.

I almost fainted by this. Thank god for such amazing friends. As I almost hit the floor, they were already there to pick me up.

“Sorry.” I tell Josh.

“Did that just happen?” I whisper to Gina.

She nods yes and a smile comes across her lips. Oh no. When that happens, trouble starts.

“Mind if I get a piece of that?” Josh points to my untouched burger. How can he be so calm when his touch practically made me a teenie girl?

“Uh, no. Not at all.” I tell him.

He carefully takes half of the burger and eats it. Before he bites into it he tells me, “I recommend you eat that so we can go.” A smile forms in his eyes.

“Ha. Yeah. Sure.”

We just sit there staring at each other, waiting for one to take a bite.

“Why don’t we just go now?” I ask the others.

“I’m up to that.” Maybe these kids weren’t so bad.
